Fall in Love with Amsterdam
Labeled as the land of weed and hookers, Amsterdam’s culture of biking, beer and pancakes tends to get overlooked by tourists. This city has two starkly different sides, both of which are 100% worth a trip to the Netherlands to experience. On one side we have the alleyways full of naked women and a wide selection of, well, interesting sex shows. Then, we have this other side that is nothing but wholesome. It’s full of apple and cheese pancakes, boat rides through the canals with a side of ice-cold beer, all the stroopwafels you can eat and an almost eerie amount of smiling faces. I can truly say that I’ve never met a friendlier bunch throughout my travels than the people of Holland. This city has a certain je ne sais quoi that just screams positive vibes. Although I can’t deny the fame and attractiveness of the Red Light District and all of its unique history, I was pulled in by the tranquil canals, the colorful flowers and just downright pleasant culture.
I’ve spent quite some time in Amsterdam and I have never been bored. Whether traveling with friends or riding solo, the sheer energy of this place will leave you smitten… even if you are just wandering aimlessly. Now I’m sure a real Amsterdammer will be able to steer you in a better direction than myself, but I think I’ve experienced enough of the city to get you started on some places and experiences that you can add to your itinerary.
1. Pancakes!
I love to eat, so it’s natural that I’d start the list off with some grub. For my American travel birds, the pancakes here are a bit different than our beloved IHOP. Think more of a pancake-crêpe hybrid. Although there are plenty of great places to get your hands on this delicious, traditional Dutch dish, “The Pancake Bakery,” located on the famous Prinsengracht canal, is a must-try. It’s been around since 1980 and has made quite the name for itself. It's loved by locals and visitors alike. Boasting the same owner for almost 40 years now, it’s no wonder that this quaint little place has such a cozy ambiance. You’ll feel right at home.

2. Vondelpark
Dubbed as Amsterdam’s most famous park, this charming pool of the greenest grass is the best way to unwind after the day’s activities. It is the quintessential relaxation spot in Amsterdam and the ideal place for a picnic to chat about how amazing your trip is going! Pack a picnic, grab a blanket and take a peaceful pit stop with your pals to soak up the sun. Or snow.
Maybe you’ll even have time for one of their guided bike tours! –

3. Coffeeshops
It would be a crying shame to miss out on the coffee shop culture of the Dam. Even if getting high isn’t really your cup of tea, coffee shop culture can’t be experienced anywhere else. Some people come to Amsterdam for this reason alone! Where else are you gonna light up at the local coffee spot? I was intimidated and a total novice to everything that is weed, but I can guarantee that whoever is sitting next to you will be more than happy to help out and have a chat – but if you’re too shy, just spring for the pre-rolls and ask the employees to steer you in the right direction. Make a friend, smoke a joint, order a drink and take a breather.
Amsterdam has no shortage of coffee shops. You’ll notice tons as you explore the streets, but here are some of their most popular –

4. Rent a Bike
I know this one can be a bit intimidating considering the Dutch were pretty much born to bike. Don’t worry though, you’ll get the hang of it and will be so happy you tried. A bike will save your poor feet and your precious time if you only get to experience this city for a short time. You’ll fall in love with the grand architecture that’s so flawlessly complimented by the peaceful canals. You can join a bike tour around the city if you’re in the mood for some company, or just rent one and explore at your own pace. It’s easily the best way to get around the city. The trams are great as well and easy to navigate, but biking is the way of the Dutch and this way you won’t miss out on any of the sights!
Not all bike tours are created equal. Each tour has something unique to offer. Check these out to get you started! –

5. All the Attractions!
Some of the top museums and attractions include the famous Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank Huis, Madame Tussauds, the Heineken Experience, the Rijksmuseum and the canal cruises. Even though all of the experiences are well worth the time and money so that you can learn the history of what makes Amsterdam well… Amsterdam, it may be tough to fit everything into your schedule. Go ahead and pick whatever sparks the most interest and save the rest for your next visit. I recommend taking in the culture, meeting the locals, and soaking up your surroundings before you rush to fit all of the tours and attractions into one or two days. Don’t get me wrong though, they’re remarkable and if you have the stamina, do ‘em all!
This link provides information on some of the most popular activities, but there are other, more underrated events that may be more your speed (and way less crowded) – maybe a pub-crawl or a visit to the Amsterdam zoo. See what you can find! –

Always keep in mind that it’s important to travel your way! The more time you spend in a city, the more you’ll find what you love about it and where you want to spend most of your time. Amsterdam has such a special individuality to it. Embrace the culture and happy travels!
